Day 1: May 22/Sunday

Volunteers Arrival

Meet WCI staff at Phoenix airport by 1:00 pm. Drive through the Sonoran Desert to Puerto Peñasco (approx. 4 hours). Settle into Villa Granada by 6 p.m., a lodge located in downtown Puerto Peñasco, within a 5-minute drive to the downtown Malecon (waterfront). “Welcome to Baja Mexico” medical orientation and dinner; review trip itinerary and discuss tomorrow’s agenda. Organize donations. Pool at the hotel!

Day 2: May 23/ Monday

ISL Practical Orientation/Introduction to Home Visits

Morning: Medical Orientation: Learn about the Mexican healthcare system. Practice community visits and clinic triage. Medical Spanish and pharmacology seminar.

Afternoon: Lunch at El Capitan restaurant. House visits and surveys with community ministry of health medical workers. 

Evening: Seminar on Medicinal Plants of the Sonoran Desert. Dinner out, group reflection. 

(Breakfast & dinner provided at hotel; no-host lunch at El Capitan, $8-$13 per person)

Day 3: May 24/Tuesday

Visit Women’s Rehab Center/Centro De Salud/Centro Comunitario/Home visits

Morning: Visit Women’s Rehab Center assisting with vital signs and education and mini clinic.

Afternoon: We will be doing home visits with individual patients, assessing living conditions, with health concerns that include lice, scabies, parasites, diarrhea, and acute childhood illnesses. We will learn about education opportunities, programs available for education besides schools in the community. Visit Christian community centers and serve in Peñasco Centro Comunitario. 

 Evening: Cultural dance!  Group reflection, discuss tomorrow’s agenda. Pool fun.

Day 4: May 25/Wednesday

Centro De Salud/Home Visits/Mission visits

Morning: Tour Centro de Salud (Health Department) Work with a nurse, doctor, observing/assisting with vital signs and health assessments. 

Afternoon: We will be doing home visits 1-3 pm with individual patients, assessing living conditions, with health concerns that include lice, scabies, parasites, diarrhea, and acute childhood illnesses. Recreational time 3-6 pm which can be pooltime, beach time or doing activities you can pay for:  hang-gliding/4X4s, banana boat rides, zip line, costs vary on each of these activites but run from $20 — $40. 

Evening: Dinner out 7pm; Group reflection; discuss tomorrow’s agenda.

(Breakfast & lunch provided; no host dinner at Fresh Co, $6-$10 not including beverage.

Day 5: May 26/Thursday

Community Clinic and Childrens Health Fiesta

Morning: Community Clinic. Volunteers will rotate through stations performing patient interviews, taking vitals. They will also observe the examination/diagnosis/treatment process.

Afternoon: Community clinic continues, then free time. 

Evening: Dinner out; Group reflection; discuss tomorrow’s agenda.

(Breakfast & lunch provided; no host dinner at Wrecked Restaurant, $13-$20 not including beverages)

Day 6: May 26/Friday

Community Clinic and Childrens Health Fiesta

Morning/Afternoon: Community Clinic. Volunteers will rotate through stations performing patient interviews, taking vitals, and helping in the pharmacy. They will observe the examination/diagnosis/treatment process.  Depending on clinic needs possible early time off for recreation.

Evening: Sunset Cruise, $25-$40 Dinner out; group reflection. Alternate evening activity is at the Melacon on the beach and restaurants. 

(Breakfast & lunch provided; no host dinner at La Curva after the cruise, $15-$18 not including beverages).

Day 7: May 28/Saturday

Tourist morning/shopping

Departure by 11:00 am. Return to Phoenix. This day’s itinerary will depend on travel options selected below

Travel Options

  1. 12 people in a van to/from LV to Mexico for $75 8-hour drive each way.  
  2. Flight to/from Phoenix 1 hr flight approx. $300 round trip, plus 4-hour van drive from Phoenix to Mexico. 

Trip Price: $985 plus $75 for van from LV plus food/souvenirs, extra tourist activities.
